TWRP and Bump

Does my phone need to be bump'd to flash TWRP? I saw a guide on how to flash TWRP on Lollipop without Bump. I'm still confused as to what bumping is. I read the Bump thread but am still finding myself unable to fully understand.

Can someone shed some light on this for me?
