Getting around Verizon front end to run on Tmobile? Custom ROM only?

I have a new, refurb Verizon S4 SCH-I545 with V5.0.1 on it. I was able to go in and create a new APN and phone sort of functions but it seems apparent that the phone is not operating on the correct band and frequency that tmobile is mostly running and I suspect the Verizon boot loader is locking out certain functions? I cannot confirm this because I have yet to find a service mode code that works on the phone to review its current connection specs.

It mostly wants to connect to 2G Edge with poor signal, despite having a tmobile tower 300ft from me. I have another Tmobile LG Leon here and it immediately locks to 4GLTE with good signal. I was going to point towards a phone issue but until I can determine if Verizon's front end is jacking with and locking settings out, I don't know which way to go.

I would go through the steps to root and load a ROM if I knew it would fix this issue. I know the verizon APN is listed in the APNs and I CANNOT remove it. However, I was able to create another APN for tmoible.

I need to gather intel on what bands each enable or what that Verizon boot loader is doing ?
