SOS locked myself out

Hi
got the SMT 320 (8.4) and forgot my lockscreen password as I was in such a hurry...
Wifi is not on. Have tried to switch it on via adb but no success. Comes up as "unauthorised"...
Device is unlocked rooted and runs cyanogenmod rom 10 (I think)

Can anyone tell me what to do? Have looked around for hours but cannot find right advice
Can I just go to TWRP and do a factory reset?
I am a real stupid newbee so would really appreciate steps and links if there are...
would be extremely grateful!

Root myself or install a rooted stock image

For the longest time I have never understood which is better, to root myself, or to install a rooted stock image that someone else did.

All I am looking to do is use ad away and titanium backup. Maybe maybe a couple other root programs but nothing drastic. I will, or can, install TWRP. But that is not necessarily essential.

I have heard rumors that there is problems with some of the pre-rooted images when it comes to Wi-Fi and other bugs. Will I avoid all these bugs by rooting myself?

Is there a benefit to one way over another, or a problem with one that can be a avoided doing the other?

Sorry if this is a very basic question, or if it's been answered several times, I have searched the forums for about 40 minutes now and I'm not able to find anything about it that answers the question directly
