LG G2 (VS980) Download Mode Error: Process Halted at 0%

I've done a bit on my phone over the past: installed TWRP, rooted, installed some ROMs, and eventually reverted back to stock Lollipop. Somewhere along the way, I lost the ability to use Download Mode properly, which prevents me from doing a number of things: installing root, a bootloader, ROMS, etc.

If I enter download mode, I'll see the following:
Firmware Update
Do not unplug the USB connection until the process is complete
Progress bar here remains at 0% at all times.
Beneath this section is a box that has two lines (first line is grey, second is in red):
VUSER_G2 B69
Modified

Any idea why my download mode is failing to continue? It should be installing the device to my computer at this time, but it just holds steady.

On a possibly related note, I've tried using various root methods (including a 1-click root program), none of which work. Something seems borked with my phone, though it otherwise functions normally.

Please help!

Curious about non blackbox root process for Nexus devices

I have been a Linux based software developer for over 10 years but recently started looking into Android development and just purchased a Nexus 6 phone from Motorola to start hacking on. The first thing obviously is to unlock the bootloader (which seems really straight forward) and then root the phone. But this leads me to a question.

I have been searching the internet for root techniques for the Nexus device and I keep finding tutorials that point me to downloading premade files from others that root the phone in a blackbox fashion. I would rather understand the actual root process than just follow a cookie cutter process designed to make it easier for people who don't want to learn how to do it. So my question is this, does anybody know of any information anywhere that details and explains the rooting process without using others downloaded files or actually explains what those downloaded files are doing? I am a curious guy and don't really like blackboxes if I have an alternative. I would much rather learn the process so I can start figuring out how to hack on this phone more effectively.

Thanks for any information you can provide!

Wiping process before selling

I've been offered a decent price on my note 3 and due to upgrading to the note 5 in October I'm interested.

I want to encrypt before wiping but had some questions.

If i encrypt then do a factory reset, then input his sim in and start it up, will it then ask for the encryption key before he can use it? Or does wiping it also remove the request for a key while still keeping the original data scrambled?

Also something i can't remember from before. When i have done the reset, does it give the option to turn off ready for the first boot being when his sim is in? Or does it automatically restart so i have to allow it to boot then tell it i dont want to log in my details?

Thanks guys
